As Christmas trees start coming down, and the last shreds of wrapping paper are thrown away we sit with our cookie hangovers and take an inventory the goodies we got. Of course it’s the thought that counts but sometimes you just can’t help feeling a little… disappointed?
Here’s the good news: You can treat yourself not only to a great gift, but one that will help you succeed in your business this upcoming year!
I think Ned Flanders said it best:
Sometimes, you got to spoil yourself… spoil yourself… spoil yourself…
So with that in mind I’ve come up with five tech toys you should treat yourself to for 2010. I’m not going into specific details of any models since this will be outdated pretty quickly, but this should give you an idea of where to start and what to look for.
1. QWERTY Phone
There’s a lot to choose from, but consider getting a new phone with a QWERTY keyboard. Try out a few that have physical keys and some with an on-screen keyboard to see which you like. If you have to use a stylus to type though you’ll want to keep looking. Before you know it you’ll be texting like a teenager!
Platforms include the iPhone, Windows Mobile, Palm Pre (webOS) and the newer Google Android. They all have their advantages, and each of the wireless providers offer different models. Sign up for an email & data plan and configure your phone to check your email frequently (at least once an hour) to not miss any important messages, or even better, new leads!
2. Flip Video Camera
Make 2010 the year of video! Make video tours of your listings or start a real estate vlog (video blog). They can also come in handy when you have a new listing to take a quick video of the property so you don’t forget any colors, flooring, special features or details.
Both Windows and Macs have simple built-in video editing software, or you could buy something geared to hobbyists up to the professional level. You probably won’t need a lot of advanced features or filters, so do some research and find something easy to use. You want to be out there selling houses, not trying to be the next James Cameron!
3. GPS
The prices of GPS units have dropped a lot over the last few years, and they’re packed with useful features. If you’re still driving around with a pile of listing sheets when you take your clients out to see homes it’s time to invest in a basic GPS unit. Not only is it safer to use when trying to find your way, you’ll look more organized and professional!
4. Netbook
Mini-notebooks, ultra-portable, sub-laptops… whatever you want to call them, what these small and cheap laptops lack in size and power they make up for in portability. Netbooks have small screens and keyboards, but they run longer and are much lighter.
You won’t be using a netbook as your main workstation, but if you add on a 3G wireless network plan, you can surf the web from anywhere (like while sitting an open house) or look up property details and check your email even on the road (uh.. not while driving please!) Some wireless providers even offer free laptops if you’re willing to sign up for a long-term wireless plan.
5. Voice Recorder
If you’re like me, inspiration often strikes while driving. A while back I bought a digital voice recorder to keep in the car and now I can capture all my million dollar ideas as I have them! They’re also a great little tool for making notes as you walk through a property. Get one with a USB output so you can save notes to your computer for archiving or easier access.
